Associate Director, Quality Control

I appreciate the diversity of tasks and the flexibility that is required of us on a daily basis. I see WuXi STA as a great opportunity to learn, grow, and embrace the CRDMO culture.

Bruno joined the Couvet, Switzerland site at the end of 2018 as a Manager in the Quality Control department to help with hiring and building the team. He is now an Associate Director of Quality Control. Bruno has established a strong team spirit and fostered a culture of kindness within the QC team and beyond, allowing the team to rise to challenges and embrace change in a positive manner. He also played a key role in establishing a feedback culture across the entire site. Bruno holds a bachelor’s degree in Pharmaceutics from the French University of Limoges.

What I like most about working at WuXi STA San Diego site is the selective and collaborative nature of our teams. Our relatively small teams work closely together and share ideas to achieve common goals, allowing everyone to have a significant impact on the success of a project. In addition, the highly collaborative environment between teams provides a platform for learning from experts in different fields.

Lu (Lucia) Zhu, Ph.D.

Lucia Zhu, Ph.D.

Senior Scientist, Biocatalysis Team , Process Chemistry Technology Platform

There are the opportunities to grow and learn at WuXi STA. In the last year I have been responsible for several projects, which helped me grow fast in many different aspects including communication, cross-departmental collaboration, leadership, etc

Lu joined Wuxi STA in 2020 in the process chemistry and biocatalysis department at the Shanghai Jinshan site. She established an enzyme evolution R&D team responsible for several successful biocatalysis projects, applied for a patent, and was quickly promoted in just one year.  She earned a Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from Wuhan University, China, and did postdoc research in Biocatalysis and Green chemistry from the National University of Singapore (NUS).

What do you like most about working for WuXi STA?

To advance our projects, both leaders and team members introduce thoughts openly. Good ideas are always respected and supported. I believe it encourages us to become more active and innovative, thus facilitating the development of ourselves and the team. There are opportunities to succeed, personally and professionally, for everyone here.

Emilie Breton

Emilie Breton

Director, Quality Operations

As a Quality Leader, I am proud to be part of a very competent team that lives our core value “Doing the Right Thing, Doing it Right” on a daily basis and where teamwork is paramount.

Emilie joined the Couvet, Switzerland site in 2019 as an Associate Director in Quality Operations supporting different departments and is now a deputy QA Responsible Person. Since 2021, when WuXi STA acquired the site, she became a leader on the IT integration team. She earned an engineering degree in biology at Polytech Clermont-Ferrand, France.

What do you enjoy most at WuXi STA?

The Couvet site is a brand-new site, located in the middle of the Swiss Jura mountains. The laboratory and production facilities are state-of-the-art. That creates a motivating, quiet and pleasant work environment. In addition, this facility was designed with industry-leading energy efficiency and the latest environmental sustainability standards, respecting the surrounding ecosystem and being a showcase facility for the industry in the area. This site has a huge potential to expand, and we expect a lot of development opportunities in the next coming years. It gives me confidence that the future looks bright here.

Shuai Zhang, Ph.D.

Shuai Zhang, Ph.D.

Associate Director , Late Phase Formulation Development

WuXi STA builds on a new graduate’s knowledge and provides ample resources to learn the most advanced technologies in the industry.

Shuai joined WuXi STA in 2017 in the late phase formulation department at our Shanghai Waiqaoqiao site. In the first three months, he built and led a team. Within one year he was promoted and won an Outstanding Employee award. Shuai has received recognition from multiple clients over the last four years. He earned a Ph.D. in Pharmaceutics from the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK).

What do you like most about working for WuXi STA?

The ability to learn from colleagues who are specialized in different fields. For example, the colleagues that I work with on a large formulation project could be responsible for manufacturing, engineering, analysis, quality, registration, and so on, and have specific expertise. Thanks to communication with them in daily work, I can enrich my knowledge and make new connections. I believe the WuXi STA integrated platform is a significant advantage to professional growth.

Jiankai Yang, Ph.D.

Jiankai Yang, Ph.D.

Associate Director, Formulation R&D

WuXi STA provides the best platform for R&D folks like me. It provides me opportunities to work on many different and exciting projects. In addition, all my colleagues here are intelligent, accommodating, and open-minded. With their support, I feel I am up to any challenges and truly inspired by our dream that “Every Drug Can Be Made and Every Disease Can Be Treated.

Jiankai joined the formulation R&D department at our Shanghai Waigaoqiao site in 2018. He advanced from senior scientist to principal scientist and group leader in less than 3 years. He earned a bachelor’s in chemical engineering at the University of Sheffield in England, completed an MPhil program in advanced chemical engineering at the University of Cambridge, completed his Ph.D. at the University of Sheffield.

What suggestion you would like to give to people who want to switch from academia to industry?

For people who are thinking of moving to industry from academia is to understand that your research skills such as literature survey, experiment design, etc. will be essential to helping you succeed in the industry. Even if there is some difference between what I studied back in the university and what I currently do in my job, with these research skills, I have found I can quickly learn what is required from any new projects and create a scientific and systematic approach to tackle the project.

Also, it is fairly important to build up transferable skills such as communication, professional writing, and time management. These skills become more important and needed extensively in an industry setting as there are more departments involved and multiple clients on short deadlines.

Xianzhe (Jason) Wang, Ph.D.

Jason Wang

Director, Oligonucleotide and Peptide Analysis

I never expected I would be able to grow and develop so much both professionally and personally. Apart from WuXi STA’s unique platform, I find myself among a great group of colleagues who are very intelligent and supportive. We share the same goal, honor the “can do” attitude and value innovative ways of thinking.

Xianzhe joined in early 2018 in the oligonucleotide and peptide analysis department at our Changzhou site. In less than 3 years, he has accomplished 150+ projects and has grown to an associate director leading a team of 60 people. He earned a Ph.D. in analytical chemistry from Northeastern University in Boston, MA USA.

Can you share your thoughts on why WuXi STA?

There are so many factors about WuXi STA that attracted me when I made the decision such as corporate culture, career development opportunities, etc. If I have to pick one, I would say the unique technical platform attracted scientists like me. I was fortunate enough to work with true industry experts and gain hands-on experience with all types of cutting-edge projects that are leading the market. Joining WuXi STA turned out to be a great decision for me.
